Independence Day Surprise

Mom, the chicken you gave us is malfunctioning. You sent us two hens because they kept running off and getting into trouble. Well, we thought we had taught them better - but we were very wrong. They're still running off. And they've gotten into LOTS of trouble!

Somehow, one of those little Buff girls managed to keep a secret for a MONTH. She ran off every day and laid her eggs and then those eggs came walking home today. They grew legs!! They also grew feathers and beaks and little peeping noises too!

Thanks Mom. Next time warn us!

Found eight little babies following one naughty hen around the field today.
We gathered them up, and brought them somewhere safer - out of the range of raccoons, rats, neighborhood barn cats and hawks.

What a bunch of little firecrackers!

Don't let anyone know - but we're in loooooove!
There's never a dull moment around our farm.

So healthy and cute! The little hen is beautiful! Is she a cochin or just that fluffed out for her babies?
I know what you mean about trying to protect them from the hawks and coons and lions tigers n bears Ohmy! If I leave any of mine running loose that little, by the end of the day they are all MIA's.

I'm glad you posted it on the 4th. This is the day my mother died, and I like seeing all the new babies, signs of new life in the midst of my very troubling times.
